Deccan Development Society (DDS)|Food & Community Sovereignty

The Deccan Development Society (DDS) is a long-standing grassroots organisation working across villages in Sangareddy district of Telangana, in close partnership with women’s sanghams — voluntary village-level associations of marginalised rural women. These collectives are made up largely of small farmers, landless labourers, and Dalit women who have historically had limited access to resources, decision-making, and livelihoods.

DDS’s work began with the immediate goal of food security, but over the decades it has evolved into a broader effort to help women reclaim control over food production, seeds, natural resources, and local markets. Through continuous dialogue, collective action, and community-led programmes, DDS supports rural women in strengthening their leadership, autonomy, and dignity within their villages.

Key Areas of Work & Community Systems

DDS works across interconnected systems that place women at the centre of rural resilience:

• Community-led food production and nutrition security
• Seed conservation and indigenous seed sovereignty
• Ecological farming and permaculture-based practices
• Women-led collectives and local governance
• Autonomous local markets and value systems
• Community media and knowledge-sharing platforms

These initiatives are designed to keep control of resources within villages, reducing dependency on external systems while strengthening ecological and social stability.

How DDS Enables Community-Led Sustainability

✔️ Strengthens women’s collectives as local decision-making bodies
✔️ Promotes food and seed sovereignty through indigenous practices
✔️ Supports ecological agriculture and soil regeneration
✔️ Encourages local control over natural resources and markets
✔️ Builds long-term leadership and social equity for rural women
✔️ Integrates environmental care with human dignity

Why AliveGreen Features Deccan Development Society

AliveGreen features DDS because their work demonstrates that sustainability begins with who controls food, resources, and knowledge at the local level. By centring women’s leadership and community autonomy, DDS shows how ecological care and social equity can grow together through everyday agricultural and cultural practices.

Their emphasis on food sovereignty, seed conservation, and locally governed systems aligns deeply with AliveGreen’s belief that resilient communities are built through participation, care for the land, and shared ownership — rather than dependence on distant systems.

AliveGreen does not sell these products or services. We feature organisations whose work aligns with our values and encourages responsible, community-led choices.
